Duolingo CEO Reverses Stance on AI Replacement, Emphasizes Human-AI Collaboration

Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn has walked back earlier suggestions that artificial intelligence WOULD replace human roles at the language-learning platform. In a LinkedIn post, von Ahn clarified that AI serves as a productivity tool rather than a workforce replacement, noting the company continues hiring at pre-AI adoption rates.

The executive outlined internal upskilling initiatives including workshops, advisory councils, and dedicated experimentation time to help employees adapt to AI integration. This pivot follows similar retractions from Klarna and Shopify executives regarding AI’s workforce impact.

Notably absent from von Ahn’s statement was any continuation of Duolingo’s previously announced plan to phase out certain contractors. The reversal suggests growing industry recognition that current AI capabilities may not yet match the HYPE surrounding workforce automation.
